MANILA, Philippines - State-owned National Power Corp. (Napocor) will temporarily shut down starting today the 218-megawatt (MW) Angat hydroelectric power plant for maintenance works until Sept. 29.
Napocor, in a statement, said the shutdown will be undertaken to pave the way for the repairs of the facility.
“It will take effect to undergo repairs, specifically of a bypass valve that goes to its auxiliary unit. The shutdown will be for two days, Napocor said.
The repairs are needed to maintain the integrity of the level of control over the water supply in the reservoir. Should repairs are not undertaken, there may be some over releases to Ipo Dam, which could have some significant effect to Metro Manila’s water supply in the near future, the company explained.
Napocor also assured the public that measures have been undertaken to ensure a continuous supply of water for the two concessionaires, contained in an agreement signed between Napocor, Manila Water, Maynilad, Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) and the Common Purpose Facility.
Based on the agreement, Napocor will advance the release of additional water from the Angat Dam to increase the level of the Ipo Dam to 101 meters above sea level (masl) before the shutdown.
After shutdown, Napocor will undertake the needed repairs for a maximum of two days.
The agreement noted that the first day of shutdown will not affect both concessionaires.
However, if after the first day of repairs, should there be any unforeseen events that may cause its delay from the planned 48-hour activities, Napocor will abort the repairs automatically.
On the second day of shutdown, it is agreed that Maynilad’s water requirements of 2,150 million liters a day (MLD) shall be sourced from its dedicated aqueducts while Manila Water’s requirements shall be sourced from both its own dedicated aqueducts and the La Mesa Dam.
After the two-day shutdown, Napocor will replenish the volume of water reduced and will release the normal requirements for both concessionaires.
It is also assured that the shutdown of the Angat plant will not have any significant effect on the country’s power supply.
