KORONADAL CITY (MindaNews/24 August)—An unidentified person has sabotaged a facility of the National Grid Corp of the Philippines (NGCP) causing a five-hour power interruption early this week in parts of South Cotabato, a company executive said on Wednesday.
Cynthia Perez-Alabanza, NGCP spokesperson, said they have restored power transmission services in parts of South Cotabato on August 22 after corrective measures were completed on a line that experienced a sustained fault from 7:15 am to 12:13 pm.
“Initial investigation showed that it was intentionally cut by an unidentified person, which caused its midspan to sag and cause the outage,” she said in a statement.
Checking on the cause of the power interruption, Alabanza said that their transmission line crew found that an aluminum conductor of NGCP’s decommissioned transmission line sagged and came in contact with the Tacurong–Koronadal-Surallah 69-kV sub-transmission line.
The 69-kV facility is owned by the South Cotabato Electric Cooperative I and located in Barangay Kalandagan, Tacurong City in Sultan Kudarat province.
One side of the aluminum conductor of the said decommissioned transmission line was anchored to the ground, in preparation for its replacement as part of the Tacurong- General Santos 138-kV transmission line upgrade project, Alabanza said.
Among the areas affected by the power interruption were parts of Koronadal City and the towns of Banga, Surallah, T’boli, Lake Sebu, Tampakan, Tantangan, Norala and Santo Niño. (Bong Sarmiento/MindaNews)
