PHILIPPINE National Oil Co.-Exploration Corp. has established an endowment fund for energy research, development and scholarships in the University of the Philippines.
Gemiliano Lopez Jr., PNOC-EC chairman, said the P500-million fund would go to scholarship grants, research grants and professorial chairs for students and faculty members of the state university.
He said the assistance would allow the company “to have a steady supply of qualified engineers, geologists, technicians and other highly skilled personnel to perform its mandate.”
Under the agreement, PNOC-EC shall initially set aside P125 million for the fund starting 2011, and P125 million each year in the next three years.
The recipients of research grants shall be required to work with PNOC-EC after graduation for a period of at least one year for every year of scholarship.
If the grantee is unable to work with PNOC EC, he or she shall be required to work and practice his or her profession in the country for a period of one year for every year of scholarship.
The recipients of research grants and professorial chairs shall focus their research studies and lectures on topics that are applicable or related to PNOC-EC’s core purposes.
