MANILA, Philippines - The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) continues to strengthen its Visayas transmission line as it installs new substation units in the region, a company official said.
NGCP spokesperson Cynthia Alabanza said the company recently energized a 100-megavolt ampere (MVA) power transformer at its Cebu substation.
She said putting up new substations is their response to Visayan Electric Co.’s (VECO) request to support their distribution capacity after a technical problem affected one of their transformers in May this year.
The equipment installed on Sept. 26, 2012 is a spare transformer from NGCP’s Ubay Substation in Bohol, Alabanza said.
It was transported to Cebu after the integrity tests yielded satisfactory results.
Alabanza said NGCP facilitated the hauling, assembly, testing, and worked closely with VECO until its successful energization.
According the NGCP official, this additional capacity aims to enhance the reliability and quality of electricity delivered to customers in Cebu City.
NGCP has been investing to improve the country’s power transmission highway after it won the concession to operate and maintain the National Transmission Corp. (TranCo) assets in 2007.
Specifically, NGCP took over the operations and maintenance of the country’s transmission network, which consists of 20,236 circuit kilometers (combined length of transmission and sub-transmission) and a total capacity of 24,607 MVA, from the government on Jan. 15, 2009.
Under the 10-year transmission development plan (TDP), NGCP is expected to allot budget to expand, upgrade, rehabilitate, repair and maintain the nationwide transmission system, as mandated by the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001. source
