LINGAYEN—Authorities have ordered 31 fish cage owners near the 1,200-megawatt power plant in Sual, Pangasinan to stop their operations.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources said the structures found outside the10-hectare mariculture zone in that town had no environment compliance certificates.
The DENR regional office in San Fernando city in Lau Union sent lawyer Joseph Estrella on Thursday to serve the agency’s cease and desist order.
During the meeting with fish cage owners, he said feeding and harvesting is disallowed.
The biggest concentration of fish cages are near the Sual power station of TeaM Energy with 412 structures. The rest are spread in the villages of Pangascasan and Baquien.
The controversy surfaced last month plant manager Riben Licario warned the authorities of a power blackout triggered by a fishkill that would clog the cooling system of the power generators.
He cited a jellyfish swarm in the past that shutdown the plant and caused a blackout in Luzon. source
