NATIONAL POWER Corp. (Napocor) said it is developing a mobile application that will allow easier monitoring of the water elevation at dams all over the country, with the intention of providing an early warning system for downstream flooding.

In a statement, the state-run power firm said it signed a contract with Appefize, Inc. for the software.

“The first time this project proposal was presented to me, I knew right away that this is what we need as part of our responsibility in protecting the welfare of our stakeholders especially those living downstream of our dams,” Napocor President Ma. Gladys Cruz-Sta. Rita said in the statement.

The “Napocor App” is due to be launched next month, according to the company.

The application will carry data from Napocor’s Dams Management Department, which will provide information on the 17 large dams operated and maintained by the company.

Data will include the dam’s location, its elevation level and status. It will also provide notices on water discharges.

Napocor said Russell Tomas, president of Appefize, has presented a prototype for the mobile application.

“We will try to make it as best as we can for the Filipino people,” said Mr. Tomas.

The application will be developed at no cost to the state-owned company. Appefize will instead open the platform for advertising.

Napocor said it plans to feature on this mobile app the data on its Watershed Management and missionary electrification through its Small Power Utilities Group.

Apart from watershed and dam management, Napocor also provides electricity to remote barangays and villages or areas not connected to the country’s power grid.

Areas considered off-grid include Mindoro, Marinduque, Palawan, Romblon, Masbate, Siquijor, Zamboanga, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi. -- Claire-Ann Marie C. Feliciano source
