Korea Water eyes solar power system in Angat

Korea Water Resources Corp. is keen on putting up a $60-million floating solar power system in Angat Dam that will provide at least 10 megawatts of additional electricity to the Luzon grid.

“We are planning to have a floating solar power system in reservoirs here in the Philippines and our first target is Angat Dam,” Jiheun Yun, K-Water Philippine representative, told reporters Friday.

He said the solar plant would require an investment of $6 million per megawatt, including the cost of transmission lines.

He said the Korean company will begin a feasibility study for the power system next year. It will take six months to complete the study and another six months to finish construction of the solar plant.

“We will finish this by 2013 if there will be no problems with the government,” Yun said.

“We can sell the power for off-peak. We can also join the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market depending on how much we can produce,” he added.

Yun said residents had nothing to worry about the safety of the water, citing its technology was compliant with the Korean environment policies, which are “stricter than that of the Philippines.”

K-Water is the company that submitted an offer of $440.8 million to operate the 218-megawatt Angat hydroelectric power plant in an auction in April 28 last year. The company made the bid with no local partner.
