NORTH COTABATO, Philippines – Local power utilities are worried on the impact of the sudden reduction of power supply in Mindanao by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

The NGCP has curtailed about 70 percent of electricity supply in key areas in Mindanao, but has not made any comprehensive explanation to the public on its implementation.

For its part, the Cotabato Electric Cooperative (COTELCO), whose area covers 17 towns in North Cotabato, has enforce a 30-minute rotating power shutdown due to the incident.

Vincent Baguio, COTELCO information officer, said NGCP has reduced its supply to North Cotabato by 10 megawatts, prompting them to ration power for three days now.

Baguio said the NCGP was only invoking lack of electricity from hydro-electric plants in Bukidnon and Lanao del Sur as among the reasons for the power curtailment.

Other power utilities in Central Mindanao have also been imposing sectional power shutdown for short periods of time due to the constraint.
