Energy Secretary Jose Rene Almendras has expressed support for the construction of coal-fired power plants in Negros Occidental, despite opposition from several groups.
“I agree that a major island like Negros should have generation capacity on the island itself,” Almendras told reporters.
Philippine Power Corp. proposed to build a 70-megawatt coal project in the area while Philippine Energy Corp. wanted to put up a 100-MW coal facility.
Construction of the two plants, however, received resistance from several non-government organizations, which claimed the projects were not in line with the policy of Negros Occidental to promote clean power sources.
Almendras said Panay Island must have its own power generation capacity as it gets supply from Leyte and Cebu via the power transmission highway.
“I’m just saying you need generation capacity on the island so that in case you have transmission problems, you will be able to generate electricity there,” Almendras said.
“You need to control the transmission risk by putting generating capacity. You [need to] disperse the generation capacity as best as you can,” the energy chief said.     source
