Redondo Peninsula Energy Inc., which is building a $1.28-billion coal-fired power project in Subic Freeport, is facing another obstacle—the writ of kalikasan issued by the Supreme Court to stop the power firm’s proposed 600-megawatt power project.
In a statement, RP Energy said that while it had yet to formally receive the order, its lawyers were already preparing the company’s response to the order for submission to the court as required. RP Energy has 10 days to file its verified response upon formal receipt of the order that was issued on July 31.
“We respect the process and are mindful of the rights of those who filed the petition. RP Energy reiterates its strong adherence to the laws that govern us in implementing the project such as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ ECC process. Our records show that we have not violated or reneged on our commitment to safeguard the environment and the communities around us,” the company said.
“We want to assure the public that we are one with the nation in pushing for progress and development while ensuring the protection of the environment,” it added.
The Writ of Kalikasan was filed in the high court last month by Kabataan party-list Representative Raymond Palatino, Bayan Muna Rep. Teodoro Casiño, Gabriela Rep. Emerenciana de Jesus, Anakpawis Rep. Rafael Mariano and environmental groups led by Kalikasan president Clemente Bautista Jr. They said the Subic coal project would violate the constitutional rights of the residents of host and surrounding communities to “a balanced and healthful ecology.”—Amy R.
