A RENEWABLE energy company will put up windmills that can produce about 200 megawatts for Cebu Province.
Amihan Energy Corp. (AEC) plan to construct the windmills in Balamban, Toledo City and Sudlon II, Cebu City within two to three months.
The company would a total land area of 20,000 hectares.
Officials of AEC, the Mudajaya Berhad of Malaysia and Dongturbo Electric Company Ltd. of China presented their plans to Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III yesterday.
Joaquin Rodriguez Sr., chairman of AEC, said they hope the windmills will become operational in December.
Rodriguez said the governor and mayors concerned have issued their endorsement of the project.
AEC would be the first company to put up windmills to generate energy in the Visayas.
Rodriguez said Cebu gets strong winds that can be harnessed as energy source.
He said AEC has been studying Cebu and its wind energy in the past seven years.
Rufino Barinan, one of the founders of AEC, said one windmill can produce 2 to 2.5 megawatts.
He said phase one of the project can generate 62 megawatts while all windmills will have a combined capacity of 200 megawatts.
Rodriguez said they are also looking at solar power and other renewable energy sources.
“It will not only be the first production of clean, ecologically sound energy for the good people of Cebu but it could also be an attraction,” he said.
He said the project will create jobs, bring in revenues for the government through taxes and give way for other businesses.
He said AEC already has a contract with the National Government for the production of wind power in Cebu.
Rodriguez said the Cebu project needs an investment of $192 million to $200 million. source
