CUSTOMERS of Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) will see a significant increase in their bills this month due to surge in the generation cost the utility incurred in January.

Meralco said in a statement on Friday that its basic charge will increase by P0.92 per kilowatt-hour (/kWh), bringing the overall rate for a typical household to P9/kWh, compared to the January bill’s seven-year-low P8.09/kWh.

“The increase this month is mainly due to the upward movement in the generation charge,” Meralco said.

The generation charge in this month’s bill will rise by P0.62/kWh to P4.32/kWh, compared to January’s P3.70/kWh which was the lowest since October 2004.

The company said other components of the electricity bill also increased: the transmission charge will be up by P0.15/kWh, while taxes and other charges will show a combined increase of the same amount.

Households consuming 200 kWh a month -- which make up roughly three-fourths of Meralco customers -- will see their bills rise by P183.13, while those using 300 kWh, 400 kWh and 500 kWh will see increases of P274.70, P366.27 and P457.84, respectively. -- VVS
