THE Department of Energy (DOE), with Petron Corp., concluded on Tuesday the 13th DOE Fuel Economy Run held in Clark, Pampanga.
A total of 55 participants consisting of sedans, services port-utility vehicles (SUV), multipurpose vehicles (MPV) and pickups from various car manufacturers joined the fuel-economy run with 26 vehicles running on diesel and 26 vehicles on gasoline.
“Through this event, we will be able to determine fuel-consumption rating in kilometers per liter of different brand-new vehicles available in the market in accordance with actual highway driving conditions,” DOE Undersecretary Wimpy B. Fuentebella said.
For the diesel entries, the Volkswagen Golf GTS was the most fuel-efficient vehicle in the sedan category with a fuel-economy rating of 27.91 kilometers per liter (km/L). In the SUV category. Ssangyong Rodius topped the list with a rating of 33.12 km/L.
Toyota Innova had the highest rating of 21.6  km/L for the MPV category, while Mahindra Supro ranked the most fuel-efficient vehicle in the pickup category with a rating of 22.52 km/L.
For the gasoline entries, Kia Picanto posted the highest rating of 29.23 km/L for the sedan category, while the Honda BR-V with a rating of 22.22 km/L emerged the best in the SUV category.
The Chevrolet Trax led the MPV category with a rating of 17.98 km/L, while the BAIC Freedom ranked the most fuel-efficient in the pickup category with a rating of 15.10 km/L.
Fuentebella said “the results of the Fuel Economy  Run will help our vehicle-buying public know the car’s fuel-economy performance rating before they purchase any of them.”
“The DOE aims to empower our consumers in their choice of vehicle by putting a premium on energy efficiency,” Fuentebella added.
Results were announced during the awarding ceremonies on Tuesday based on the evaluation of the participants’ statistics after the run.
The  Fuel Economy Run is part of the DOE’s “E-Power Mo” Campaign that gives consumers increased options in making an informed judgment on energy consumption and emphasizes the consideration of energy-efficient technology as a main factor in purchasing a vehicle.
“We want to inform our consumers that fuel efficiency should be part of their criteria in making a decision aside from the brand, color and other operating features,” Fuentebella said.
The run tested the actual efficiency of vehicles by covering the route of Petron Service Station Clark from Subic Clark Tarlac Expressway and Tarlac Pangasinan La Union Expressway in Binalonan and back or a total distance of about 216.6 kilometers.
All gasoline vehicles were powered by Petron XCS which is 95 Octane and diesel-fed entries by Petron Turbo Diesel.
