Batangas power-co-op taps Aboitiz Power for supply

Batangas 2 Electric Cooperative has tapped Aboitiz Power Corp. for a 3-megawatt supply agreement as part of the latter’s efforts to diversify its portfolio and make its operations more sustainable.
Aboitiz Power will provide the supply from the Tiwi-Makban geothermal plants, through its Cleanergy brand.
Serving a peak demand of 132 megawatts, Batelec 2 is considered the largest of the 119 electric cooperatives under the supervision of the National Electrification Administration.
“We’ve been in the business for over four decades, and this is the first time we have decided to venture into the open access business and activate our local retail electricity supplier (RES),” Batelec 2 general manager Octavious Mendoza said in a joint statement.
Mendoza was referring to the Retail Competition and Open Access program, which allowed individual or groups of consumers that represent an average monthly demand of at least one megawatt to seek alternative suppliers.
“To make a difference, we have decided to source renewable supply to serve our contestable customers,” he said.
