MANILA, Philippines - An official of the Department of Energy on Friday said there is no reason why Mindanao should suffer power shortage because there is enough supply to provide electricity to the island.
"There's no shortage in power supply as far Mindanao is concerned. There's not much of a problem in terms of present capacity in Mindanao, " said Mylene Capongcol, director of Electric Power Industry Management Bureau of the DOE, in an ANC interview.
The power outages in Mindanao, Capongcol said, were owing to the failure of electric cooperatives and end users to "nominate" the volume of power that they need, but supply remains sufficient.
“The DOE has issued a department circular that required the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines to use all available capacity and closely monitor the compliance of customers,” Capongcol said.
Capongcol said the circular was only a quick fix and that Energy Secretary Rene Almendras has ordered the DOE to study which electricity model should be used in Mindanao and to find a way to connect Mindanao’s power grid to Leyte’s.
“We are completing a Mindanao energy plan,” Capongcol said.
Several areas in Mindanao are reportedly suffering eight hours of power outages daily.
