First Gen weighs power expansion

Posted  by Alena Mae S. Flores

First Gen Corp. is expanding its power generation capacity by putting up the proposed 300-megawatt San Gabriel gas plant in Batangas, a company official said over the weekend.
First Gen president Francis Giles Puno told reporters the San Gabriel expansion hinged on the availability of natural gas and that talks were ongoing with the Malampaya consortium members and the Energy Department.
The Malampaya gas field in northwest Palawan supplies two of First Gen’s natural gas-fired power plants, namely the 1,000-MW Sta Rita and 500-MW San Lorenzo stations.
“It’s more of gas availability. What I understand is there’s more gas available so we’re talking to DoE, Spex,” Puno said.
Energy Undersecretary Jay Layug earlier said the government wanted the Malampaya consortium to bid out the gas sale and purchase agreement for the excess gas.
Layug, however, said the government had not confirmed the level of excess gas production from Malampaya.
National Power Corp. earlier committed to purchase natural gas that could fuel a 300-MW expansion of the San Pascual project but did not push through with it.
