AT least P60-million savings from electricity expenses is projected to be generated from the government’s retrofitting initiatives under the Philippine Energy Efficiency Project (Peep), the Department of Energy (DOE) said on Wednesday.
Aside from generating savings from reduced electricity expenses, DOE said the Peep also targets to reduce the carbon footprint of government agencies and offices.
The DOE and 56 government agencies from the National Capital Region, Southern Tagalog and Bicol regions have forged an agreement that will result in the retrofitting of some government agencies and offices.
The government recently completed the retrofitting of 35 public buildings in Metro Manila, an undertaking which is expected to generate P13 million, or 1.37 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in savings, and eliminate 741 tons of carbon (tCO2) emission annually, the DOE said.
DOE added it has expanded the retrofitting component of the Peep to include 100 other structures from Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao, with additional potential electricity savings of P60 million or 6 GWh and do away with 3,246 tCO2 annually.
The Peep is a project that envisions to lower power demand in the country, the DOE said, adding that the project was borne out of the need to effect changes in the consumptive behavior of the consumers.
Energy Undersecretary Loreta Ayson said electricity is a commodity and its price is subject to availability of supply and consumer demand.
“We should always be mindful that energy wastage effectively reduces total available energy supply, artificially lifts demand, and promotes high prices,” she said. source
