THE Department of Energy (DOE) is hoping that power in all areas in Panay Island that were ravaged by Super Typhoon Yolanda last November 8 will be restored four days ahead of the deadline on December 24 for Leyte and Samar Islands.
Rey Malleza, of DOE Visayas, made the announcement after the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) assured that power will be restored in major lines but not yet in the far-flung sitio.
Priority for electrification will be given to evacuation centers, hospitals and health centers, schools and other government buildings and facilities.
Malleza said the extent of damages to power infrastructures showed a total of 140 toppled towers and 368 transmission line electrical posts and another 364 structures down by Yolanda that rendered blackouts in northern Iloilo, Capiz, Antique and parts of Aklan as compared to Leyte with 99 toppled towers.
The Visayas Grid depends on the power source and Leyte has a geothermal power source but the typhoon affected the generation and distribution of power in the whole Visayas area.
Already partially energized are some parts of Roxas City in Capiz, Boracay Island in northern Aklan, Kalibo in Aklan and Anilao, Iloilo. source
