ENERGY Development Corp. (EDC) said last week its Unified Leyte Geothermal (ULG) Power complex in Tongonan, Leyte, which suffered heavy damage from Supertyphoon Yolanda last year, will resume full operations in August this year.
“We should have all the units back in operation around August and, possibly, earlier depending on the availability of spare parts, which is dependent on manufacturing lead time,” said EDC President and Chief Operating Officer Richard B. Tantoco.
Just recently EDC completed repairs on a portion of the Malitbog geothermal power plant situated within the power complex.
“Malitbog is now producing 150 megawatts [MW]. So for Unified Leyte we are now producing a total of 292 MW, and for Tongonan, we have two out of three units running at a total of 75 MW,” added Tantoco.
EDC earlier disclosed that it resumed partial operations at the Tongonan, Upper Mahiao and Leyte optimization plants, which are all in the same power complex.
After the typhoon hit Leyte, EDC reported severe damage in the cooling towers of the 232-MW Malitbog, 112.5-MW Tongonan and 180-MW Mahanagdong power plants. Also, part of the cooling systems of 130-MW Upper Mahiao was damaged. The control systems of Tongonan, Mahanagdong and Upper Mahiao also sustained water damage. source
