Geothermal energy producer Energy Development Corp. expects to fully restore the typhoon-damaged power plants in Leyte by August or earlier, a company official said over the weekend.
EDC president Richard Tantoco told reporters that with the extra 77.5 megawtts recently commissioned, the Malitbog geothermal power plant is now producing 150 MW.
Typhoon Yolanda left the entire 650-MW capacity of the Leyte geothermal power plants inoperable due to the damage sustained.
“So, for Unified Leyte, we are now producing a total of 292 MW and for Tongonan, we have two out of three units running at a total of 75 MW,” Tantoco said.
The company expects to bring the 112.5-MW Tongonan geothermal power plant to full running capacity by the first quarter.
The company also partially recommissioned the Upper Mahiao and Leyte Optimization plants and successfully dispatched 57 MW to the grid.
“We should have all the units back in operation around August and possibly earlier, depending on the availability of spare parts which is dependent on manufacturing lead time,” he said.
Tantoco, however, said once the damaged plants became fully operational, the Visayas grid could not absorb it due to lack of demand. source
