TWENTY FIRMS will undergo energy efficiency audits in January under a business group’s program, signaling growing commercial interest in sustainable practices, the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) said in a statement yesterday.
This comes as the ECCP has tied up with the International Finance Corp., the World Bank’s private investment arm, to offer collateral-free loans to firms that volunteer for the audit.
The process will identify a firm’s opportunities to reduce power expenses and also combat climate change as part of ECCP’s "Energy Smart Program."
"By January, [we] will be naming the 20 companies that will be receiving a ‘walk-through’ audit of their operations and how they could become more energy efficient," the group said.
The inspection and monitoring will be conducted by Philips, Schneider Electric Philippines, and Jardine Energy, Inc. according to earlier reports.
Power consumption could fall by at least a tenth after the process, the ECCP had said, adding that it hoped to cover the country’s top 1000 firms by 2013.
In the meantime, the ECCP said it has conducted round table discussions to rally more firms to volunteer for audits.
"Private initiaties are very much important in ensuring the success of energy efficiency campaigns," the group said. -- JADH
