Capitol addresses power shortage this year

Sunstar Bacolod

NEGROS Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. is hoping to address the power shortage this year with power plants put up by interested investors.

Marañon pointed out that there were various companies that signified their intentions of putting up their power plants in the province. These include Global Power, the Alcantara Group of Companies, Aboitiz, and the Lopez companies.

"We're hoping that their projects would start in the province this year as we really encouraged them to put up their power generation here," he said.

Marañon reiterated his preference for a coal-fired power plant, although several environmental groups are opposed to the project. Aside from the fact that coal is one of the cleanest sources of power, a coal-fired power plant is also the quickest to put up.

On the planned hydro-electric power plant, Marañon said that the Department of Energy estimated that two investors would be able to realize this plan for Negros.

He said there is an initial study of putting up a 280 Megawatt Hydro Power Plant that will utilize the Bago River in Cansilayan, Murcia.

"It would be a cascading type of hydro power plant and the exhaust would be used by the Bago City Irrigation project," he said.

However, the governor said that a hydro plant needs further consideration because the characteristic of the water needs to be carefully studied. (Teresa Ellera-Dulla)
