MANILA, Philippines – The national government should impose a moratorium on mining operations in the country in light with the recent mudslide in Compostela Valley that killed eight miners, a bishop today said.
In an interview with Church-run Radyo Veritas, Boac Bishopo Reynaldo Evangelista said the Catholic church has been asking the previous administrations to put a stop to mining operations in several areas in the country.
He said the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau have identified the area as critical, including Sibuyan Island in Romblon.
Despite the threat of catastrophe, operations of small and large scale mining continue, the bishop said.
