Voltage regulator installed

Saturday, June 11, 2011
THE National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) announced that it is installing a Static Var Compensator (SVC) in its Naga-Mindanao Substation to improve voltage in northwestern Mindanao.
The Naga-Mindanao Substation is formerly known as the Sta. Clara Substation.
The NGCP, through its office in this city, said the installation of the SVC is a long-term solution to voltage and frequency fluctuations.
The SVC is an automated voltage correcting device designed to stabilize voltage difference within its acceptable range, the NGCP said.
The SVC’s near-instantaneous response to changes in the system voltage makes it more reliable to use over the conventional reactors and capacitors.
As the transmission service provider and system operator, the NGCP said that one of the firm’s primary responsibilities is to operate and maintain the transmission system at normal voltage levels at any given time.
Maintaining normal voltage values may be attained through Megavolt Ampere Reactive (MVAR) power support dispatched from generating facilities or the use of voltage compensating devices like reactors and capacitors, according to the NGCP.
Voltage and frequency fluctuations may be caused by the loading behavior of the distribution utility or the generator.
The NGCP said that civil works at the Naga-Mindanao Substation are ongoing particularly the laying of machine foundation for the SVC and truss installation of its building.
The tentative target completion and commissioning of the project is on July 30 this year, the NGCP added.
