Napocor to increase off-grid capacity

STATE-OWNED National Power Corp. plans to increase the generating capacity of power plants in off-grid areas this year.
In a report to the Department of Energy, Napocor said it plans to expand existing plants belonging to the Small Power Utilities Group (SPUG).

SPUG will increase the generating capacities of four diesel-fed power plants in Basilan, Sulu and
Tawi-Tawi from 1,108 kilowatts to as much as 2,164 kilowatts.

Besides expanding existing facilities, Napocor is also putting up new power generation facilities in areas served by SPUG.

For this year, Napocor expects to commission six new power plants in Masbate with a total rated capacity of 390 kilowatts, as well as five new generating facilities in Samar with a combined capacity of 366 kilowatts.

Napocor is also putting up a 60-kilowatt power plant in Batag, Northern Samar; and a 240-kilowatt generating unit in Maconacon.

As the missionary electrification arm of Napocor, SPUG operates 242 power plants with a combined capacity of almost 200 megawatts in far-flung islands that are not connected to any of the main grids in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

Power rates in the SPUG areas are highly subsidized and result in significant losses for Napocor every year.
