FORMER senator Miguel Zubiri blamed the Department of Energy (DOE) for the power crisis in Mindanao, saying the agency failed to put up additional fund to improve the energy facilities of two power plants in the region.
Zubiri said in a press conference held at Chin Loong Restaurant in Dumaguete City on Monday that both the Agus and Pulangi power plants in Mindanao can produce even at least 250 megawatts of power.
He clarified, however, that he is not blaming the present administration but the former administrations of former Presidents Fidel Ramos and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Bukidnon, Zubiri’s hometown, experienced six hours of brownout every day due to power shortage.
He said Mindanao needs at least 200 megawatts to provide sufficient power supply in the island, but the DOE the energy resources to private companies in compliance with the Epira law.
He said the Epira law failed according to its purpose. He failed, however, to mention if he voted for or against the law during his incumbency as senator.
Zubiri also opined that power plant owners, as well as the fuel operators and franchisee are getting richer while the consumers are getting poorer.
He said he is in favor of amending or repealing the Epira Law.
Meanwhile, Zubiri proposed to adopt wind mill technology as renewable and clean energy resources. He opposed the nuclear power plant that Representative Mark Cojuanco has proposed.
Based on USAid study, he said, wind mill technology is feasible in Bayawan City and Dauin town and it can produce at least 150 megawatts.  article source
