THE National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP), the country’s sole power-line concessionaire, said on Wednesday it continues to strengthen the power network with its new projects and rehabilitation of existing 69-kilovolt (kV) transmission lines in Samar Island.
Under its 2011 to 2012 rehabilitation plan, NGCP said it aims to replace 1,178 old 69-kV transmission poles in the area until the end of this year. As of mid-September, NGCP said it replaced a total of 942 wooden transmission poles and lightweight steel towers since the rehabilitation started in June 2011.
It said it completed the P845.88-million 138-kV Paranas to Calbayog transmission line project last year, which include the new Calbayog Substation, 62 kilometers of 138-kV transmission line, and expansion works at Paranas Substation.
NGCP said the line reinforces the old 69-kV transmission lines in the area, which are more susceptible to weather disturbances, and to also support the long-term power requirements of Samar.
Another development in the area is the P303.216 million worth of 69-kV Santa Rita to Quinapondan transmission line project, which is in its bidding stage and is expected to be completed in 2015.
The NGCP said the project aims to make the transmission network more reliable by providing an alternate power corridor to Eastern Samar.
The NGCP is a privately owned corporation in charge of operating, maintaining and developing the country’s power grid and electricity superhighways. Its regular maintenance activities and ongoing projects aim to enhance the system reliability and maintain the quality of power delivered to electricity users.    source
