DAVAO CITY—The Agusan del Sur Electric Cooperative (Aselco) has signed an advanced supply contract with Aboitiz Power Corp. on the coal plant being constructed by its subsidiary here.
AboitizPower said the contract allows the cooperative to buy up to 10 megawatts (MW) from the 300-MW coal-fired power plant project targeted to be finished by 2015.
The contract was signed in Butuan City with Aselco represented by its board president, Joel Q. Jumonong, and general manager, Emmanuel B. Galarse.  AboitizPower was represented by the assistant vice president for sales and marketing of Therma South Inc. (TSI), Jay Gatmaitan.  TSI is a subsidiary of AboitizPower and owns the coal plant it was building in Toril District, west of downtown.
Aselco has a daily peak demand of 24 MW serving Bayugan City and 13 other municipalities in Agusan del Sur.
A statement by AboitizPower quoted Galarse as saying its advanced supply contract would assure the cooperative of adequate power “for its future needs especially that Therma South has already started construction.”
“Our franchise area is experiencing a very encouraging economic growth. Our role as the electric cooperative is to ensure that this growth is supported by reliable and affordable power,” Jumonong said.
Aselco has been awarded one of the country’s best operating electric cooperatives in the recently concluded National Electric Administration Lumens held in April in Davao City.  In the same event, Aselco got the Special Awards for Category A+ EC, the Special Awards for Sitio Energization, the Sunshine Region Award and the Sunshine Award.
AboitizPower said construction of the coal plant was in full swing in Toril, this city and added the project “is seen to provide the solution to the ongoing Mindanao power crisis soonest.”
TSI is employing the latest circulating fluidized-bed technology to ensure the power plant meets stringent Philippine environmental standards, AboitizPower said.
“We are happy to have earned the confidence of Aselco and will do our best to build and deliver our power plant as scheduled by 2015,” Therma South chief operating officer Benjamin A. Cariaso Jr. said. “We have the advantage of having already started our construction and we will ensure we will build a world-class power plant that the people of Mindanao will be proud of.”
Aselco was the second distribution company to sign a supply contract from the coal plant. Two other Aboitiz-owned distribution utilities, Davao Light and Cotabato Light, earlier signed a combined 105-MW contract, leaving only 185 MW left for other Mindanao utilities and electric cooperatives, AboitizPower said.   source
