BUTUAN CITY, Agusan del Sur—Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno blamed the national government on Monday for the power crisis in Mindanao, citing its failure to rehabilitate the Pulangi and Agus power plants.

Moreno told a radio interview here the Pulangi power plant in Bukidnon and the Agus power plant in Lanao del Sur supply a big percentage of the power requirements of the island.

“Since government admitted it has no money to rehabilitate the two power plants, the only solution is to give it to private companies,” Moreno said.

Angus and Pulangi supply about 40 percent of the electricity needs of Mindanao. The two plants stopped functioning since February, which resulted in daily brownouts in several places in the area.

Plans to privatize the plants were banned by a law called the Electric Industry Reform Act or EPIRA law. There has been a growing clamor to amend the law, which was also blamed for the rising cost of electricity.

Moreno said if the government cannot rehabilitate the plants because of lack of funds and privatizing it was against the law, the people will continue to suffer while officials blame each other. source
