CITY -- South Korea’s Odin Energy Co. Ltd. is preparing to start installing its
first wind tower system here, which is expected to generate up to 200 megawatts
(MW) of power that will cover 90% of the city’s electricity demand.
Soil testing has been completed for
the site of the $2.4-million wind tower, which will be part of the planned new
local government center at the Sky City complex.
The Sky City Mega Project -- a 440-hectare township where the local government offices will be relocated along with commercial, residential and educational components -- is the city government’s flagship project.
Mayor Stephanie Uy-Tan told reporters they are fast-tracking the wind tower project, which will cover a 500-square meter (sqm) area on top of the 2,000-sqm. government center.
Based on the project plan, the tower will have twelve floors, plus a 13th floor that will also serve as a viewing deck.
Odin Energy and the city government signed the memorandum of agreement (MoA) for the project in September 2015. Construction for the road leading to the site started in February.
The Sky City, intended to decongest the downtown area, is located about two kilometers from the city center.
Ms. Tan said they are fast-tracking the wind project as it is expected to bring down electricity rates as well as attract more investors to the Sky City complex.
Suntrust Properties, Inc., a subsidiary of Megaworld Corp., is among the current locators.
After the construction of the wind tower, the mayor said Odin Energy is planning to look into the electrification of Catbalogan City’s seven island barangays that are off the grid.
“They will also set up electricity in the seven island barangays. Most of these islands only have power between 6 to 10 p.m.,” she said in Filipino.
During the MoA signing last year, ODIN Energy Vice-President Richard Jo said they do not intend to profit from their pilot project.
“Every peso we will earn will be reinvested in the city of Catbalogan,” said Mr. Jo as quoted in a press release issued by the local government.
Mr. Jo said Odin Energy, which scouted around and studied different potential sites in the Philippines, they chose Catbalogan City given its relatively similar conditions to Jeju Island where the company successfully tested its wind power system.
