SPI’s coal plant in Mindanao now runs at full capacity

by Madelaine B. Miraflor March 7, 2016

As the power supply situation gets tighter in Mindanao, Steag State Power Inc.’s (SPI) 210-megawatts (MW) is now running at full capacity after the company completes the preventive maintenance on the facility’s unit 1.
Considered as Mindanao’s first coal-fired power plant, SPI plant is now currently in full capacity operations, following the synchronization back to the Mindanao grid of its Unit 1 over the weekend.
SPI conducted recently a two-day preventive maintenance for its Unit 1 in preparation for an anticipated tighter Mindanao power supply during the summer season. The unit has a net generating capacity of 105 MW.
It went offline on March 5 for a scheduled preventive maintenance and was synchronized back to the Mindanao grid at around 10:17 pm on March 6 as planned.
SPI president and chief executive officer Bodo Goerlich explained the company’s strategy to conduct initial preventive maintenance activities during the first quarter of 2016 is to ensure that the power plant is optimally available during the summer season.
“We are carrying out the necessary preventive maintenance activities ahead of the summer season to ensure optimum availability of our capacity especially during the critical summer months when demand is at its peak while supply is historically at its low” Goerlich said.
SPI owns and operates Mindanao’s first coal-fired power plant located at the PHIVIDEC Industrial Estate in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental.
The power plant has two identical power generating units with a capacity of 105 MW (net) each, or a total combined net generating output of 210 MW.
SPI successfully carried out its first preventive maintenance schedule for the year last February 6 and 7 involving its power generating Unit 2.

Since start of its operation in November, 2006, SPI’s power plant has delivered more than 12 billion kWh of power to the Mindanao grid and has sustained a high availability rating of 90% with a low unplanned outage rate of 2.5%.
