Cotelco supports DOE on improving rural power services

June 20, 2020, 3:14 pm

KIDAPAWAN CITY – The Cotabato Electric Cooperative Inc. (Cotelco) said it fully supports the call of the Department of Energy (DOE) to ensure reliable power supply in rural areas, in preparation for the blended learning mode that will include the “homeschooling” set-up for students.

Godofredo Homez, Cotelco general manager, said they are implementing efforts to deter any unexpected power outages that would hinder teachers and learners in attending their online classes.

“This is also in compliance with future requirements as prerequisites of schools to their academic curriculum,” Homez said in a statement Friday.

Homez also sought clarification on the recent statement by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi regarding information reaching the DOE office on the complaint of some students, particularly in North Cotabato, for not being able to join online summer classes and submit assignments on time due to power outages.

“It would be more appreciative on our part if the specific area was identified for us to trace the cause and the conduct of ample measures to improve our services in that place,” he said.

He said North Cotabato has two power distribution utilities, one of which is the Cotelco 1 power sub-station serving this city and the towns of Makilala, Magpet, President Roxas, Antipas, Arakan Banisilan, Carmen, Kabacan, Matalam, M'lang, and Tulunan.

On the other hand, the Cotelco 2 power sub-station serves PPALMA, the acronym for the towns of Pikit, Pigcawayan, Alamada, Libungan, Midsayap, and Aleosan-- all in the first district of the province.

Homez believes that the particular concern is concerning the recently recorded series of power interruptions, particularly blackouts, last June 5 - 7, 2020, which was mainly caused by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines’ sudden under-frequency load shedding activities.

“Adding to the minutes of power interruptions was a huge tree that fell and hit the 69KV main power line of Cotelco 1 along the highway in Amas, Kidapawan city followed by a technical glitch in its sub-station,” he said.

Meanwhile, Cotelco is rushing the completion of its two newly-built 20MVA and 10MVA power substations in Kidapawan City and Carmen, respectively, to help stabilize electric supply, especially in far-flung villages.

"This due to the expected increase of power demand in the duration of homeschooling’ set-up,” Homez said. (PNA)
