MANILA, Philippines — House Deputy Minority leader and Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Zarate on Wednesday called on the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) to extend its “no disconnection” period for at least six months, citing that the country was still under a lockdown.

Zarate said the extension would not result in Meralco’s bankruptcy, citing that the country’s biggest power utility was still able to earn P21.71 billion in electricity sales in 2020.

He said the six-month extension would be enough time for electricity consumers to be in a better position to pay their bills considering that many lost their jobs and are finding it hard to just put meals on the table.

Meralco announced over the weekend that it would resume its disconnection activities in Metro Manila and nearby provinces after these areas shifted to general community quarantine “with heightened restrictions.”
