Albay power co-op executives finally resign

LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines – After nearly three hours of negotiations by phone between Albay Gov. Joey Salceda and Energy Secretary Rene Almendras, the scheduled power cutoff to the province was finally aborted yesterday.
This, as all the board members of the debt-ridden Albay Electric Cooperative (Aleco) finally decided to resign to allow the National Electrification Administration (NEA) to take over the troubled utility firm today.
The negotiations though took some time when Almendras informed Salceda that the Aleco board members should have addressed their resignation directly to the NEA and not to the utility firm’s officer-in-charge, for the DOE to halt the disconnection.
Salceda, however, was able to persuade Almendras to abort the power cutoff by allowing the NEA management team to immediately take control of Aleco today.
The disconnection threat was the third since September last year.
The Philippine Electricity Market Corp. had threatened to cut off power supply to Aleco, which has over 250,000 member-consumers, should it fail to settle its debts amounting to some P1.2 billion, although P843 million of it is under litigation.– With Celso Amo
