Investor eyes natural gas plant in Negros

Sunstar Bacolod
NEGROS Occidental Governor Alfredo Maranon Jr. said another investor has signified its intention to put up a natural gas plant in the province.
The company is a subsidiary of Philinvest Corp, he said, adding that the potential investor is looking for a feasible site for its plant and that the ideal location will be near the existing grid.
Marañon pointed out that Negros should have a power plant within the province that could provide consumers with cheaper and stable power in the coming years.
President Benigno Aquino III, during his visit to the province last week, ordered the Department of Energy (DOE) to find a power plant for Negros.
The President said there are a lot of investors who are interested in putting up coal-fired power plants in Negros Occidental, but they could not push through with their investments because of the strong opposition of the community.
The Geothermal Power Plant of the Energy Development Corporation in the province is encountering some problems on its operation at the buffer zone of Mt. Kanlaon National Park, making them remiss in their promise to deliver the 49-megawatt capacity target it committed to the province.
Marañon said EDC is in fact drilling more wells to possibly locate the potential geothermal sources.
The company closed its operation in Mt. Kanlaon last month. (Teresa Ellera-Dulla)
