MANILA, Philippines - State-run National Power Corp. (Napocor) is stepping up its efforts to build new and additional power generation facilities in far-flung islands and remote areas not connected to the three main grids.
In a report to the Department of Energy (DOE), Napocor said its Small Power Utilities Group (SPUG) will push for projects that can increase the capacities of existing facilities within the year.
Napocor also intends to put up new power plants that are expected to be completed this year and commissioned by 2012.
Based on the report, the increase in the capacities within the SPUG areas are seen to reach as much as 2,164 kilowatts or 2.16 megawatts.
The current projects will increase the capacities of four diesel-fired power plants in Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi by a combined 1,108 kw.
Scheduled to be commissioned this year are six new power plants in Masbate with a total rated capacity of 390 kW.
These are located in the towns of Dangcalan, Malaking Ilog, Mababang Baybay, Osmeña, Quezon and Peñafrancia. A 60-kw power plant in Batag, Northern Samar, is also scheduled for commissioning this year.
Meanwhile, five new power plants in Samar with a combined capacity of 366 kw are expected to be completed soon.
Another project, a 240-kw facility in Maconacon, Isabela, is scheduled to be completed by this month.
After the passage of the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA) of 2001, Napocor will be left with the task to run the SPUG as most of its power generation assets would be privatized.
