MANILA -- President Benigno Aquino III led on Friday the ceremonial switch-on of a hydropower plant in Oriental Mindoro, which aims to lessen the number of sitios in the country with no power supply.

The switch-on of the 2.1-megawatt Linao Cawayan Mini-Hydro Power Plant (LCMHPP) by Oriental Mindoro Electric Cooperative (Ormeco) and electrification of 45 sitios in the province initially benefited some 978 families in the area, Malacanang said.

The President said that 36,000 sitios nationwide have no electrification yet.

"It's not a joke...36,000 sitios more need to be electrified. We can do it but if we will help each other, we can achieve it faster," he said in a speech during the ceremony.

The Ormeco-owned 2.1 MW Linao Cawayan Mini-Hydro Power Plant – Lower Cascade Facility is located at Sitio Ariguy, Barangay Calangatan in San Teodoro town.

The said mini-hydro power plant facility is the first renewable energy project in the Philippines being constructed by an electric cooperative after the passage of the Renewable Energy Act of 2008. (SDR/Sunnex)
