The National Irrigation Administration office in Quezon City said the agency’s mini-hydro powerplant was recently unveiled in Isabela.
Engineer Claro Maranan, NIA head, joined Energy Undersecretary Ramon Allan Oca and Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala in the launch in time for the Monggo sowing and harvest.
Alcala keynoted the launch along with messages of Maranan and Council of Irrigators Association President Nemesio Yadao, said a statement from the NIA media office in Diliman.
“This will be the first in terms of usage of irrigation canals (for power generation) and will serve as a pilot for future DA-NIA mini-hydro water projects,” Maranan said.
“Apart from Magat River Integrated Irrigation System, the NIA has identified 147 other sites nationwide as possible locations for mini-hydro projects which can generate an estimated of not less than 28 megawatts of electricity altogether.”
