EMERGING Power, Inc. (EPI), a unit of Nickel Asia Corp., is poised to start the development of two renewable energy projects totaling 150 megawatts (MW) in Zambales, officials told reporters over the weekend.
The company on Saturday held the groundbreaking ceremonies for its 100-MW solar farm and 50-MW wind plant at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone.
“By October, construction will begin on the solar and wind power areas,” said Jose Bayani D. Baylon, vice-president for corporate communications of Nickel Asia.
“Target commissioning is February 2016,” he said, adding that the projects will be commercially operational by June that same year.
The projects will be carried out by Jobin-SQM, Inc. -- a locator at the freeport zone, which was acquired by EPI early this year.
EPI -- which is 55% owned by Nickel Asia -- has been aggressively growing its renewable energy portfolio.
The company last month signed an agreement to acquire 60% of Biliran Geothermal, Inc. (BGI) -- the holder of a 25-year geothermal energy contract that covers a 260-kilometer resource area in the province of Biliran.
BGI already drilled eight wells in the southern part of the concession area, the companies said, noting that the site is estimated to supply about 100 MW of power to the grid. The northern portion is expected to generate another 170 MW once developed.
The company’s other projects in the pipeline involve a 40-MW geothermal project in Oriental Mindoro; a 30-MW solar-bunker hybrid project in Palawan; a 10-MW solar project in Camarines Sur; and a 2.5-MW biogas project in Quezon Province. -- Claire-Ann Marie C. Feliciano source
