The Manila Electric
Co. (Meralco) will retain the 800-megawatt (MW) capacity from Interruptible
Load Program (ILP) participants to prepare for the dry months, according to
Meralco Chairman Manuel Pangilinan.
“Perhaps, it will be
still around the figure from last year,” he said.
Meralco had a total
ILP capacity of 827 MW last year, which works with establishments or industries
de-loading power consumption through generator sets. They are paid for reducing
the demand.
The chairman
explained Meralco will not seek more participants, as many power plants will
come online in the Luzon grid.
Meralco president and
chief executive Oscar Reyes said the distribution utility will also re-orient
and prepare the participants for dry runs.
Pangilinan, however,
said the demand for the dry months will depend on the completion of construction
projects.
He explained the
second half of 2016 will likely follow the trend last year, with power demand
spiking due to the numerous projects completed.
The distribution
utility earlier stressed the highest demand for the year occurs during the dry months,
since consumers tend to use more cooling appliances.
Meralco operates in
Luzon, with 5.8 million customers in its franchise area.
