Iloilo City – A
subsidiary of Global Business Power Corp. (GBP) opened Wednesday another
coal-fired plant in this city.
“By providing adequate
power supply, we are fueling the growth of industries and availability of
jobs,” said Jose Maria Lim, GBP chairman.
The plant, run by GBP
subsidiary Panay Energy Development Corp. (PEDC), can generate 150 megawatts.
GBP President Rolando
Bacani said the P15.6-billion plant was built to keep up with the rising demand
for power in Western Visayas, particularly the city and province of Iloilo.
GBP Vice President Jaime
Azurin said the firm now generates 314-MW of coal-fired power. It runs another
164-MW coal-fired plant next to its expansion project.
Business groups and
government economic officials said PEDC’s entry in 2010 boosted the confidence
of investors in Western Visayas, who rely on a stable power supply.
There was a rise in
real estate projects and the entry of more locators for business process
outsourcing (BPO) companies.
Nilo Madrid, GBP vice
president for Panay operations, said PEDC supplies electricity to Panay
Electric Co. (PECO) in Iloilo City as well as electric cooperatives in Iloilo,
Antique, Aklan, Capiz, and Guimaras provinces.
Also attending the
November 23 inauguration were Secretary Alfonso Cusi of the Department of
Energy (DOE), Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Sr., Iloilo City Mayor Jed
Patrick Mabilog, and Iloilo City Vice Mayor Jose Espinosa III.
