Iloilo City – A power
distributor in Negros Island has acquired an additional 12 megawatts from a
subsidiary of Global Business Power (GBP) in Iloilo City.
The Negros Occidental
Electric Cooperative (NOCECO) signed an energy purchase agreement (EPA) with
Panay Power Corporation (PPC), the operator of the 72-megawatt diesel-fed power
plant.
John Peter Millan, a
member of the NOCECO board of directors, said that under the 22-month contract,
the PPC will provide electricity during peak hours, which is from 6 p.m. to 9
p.m.
Jonas Discaya, NOCECO
general manager, said that a prior contract for its peak load had expired and
PPC offered the lowest bid at R6.37 per kilowatt-hour (kWh).
GBP President Jaime
Azurin said the deal should help boost growth in Negros Occidental in the same
way its Iloilo-based coal-fired power plant has spurred growth in Panay Island,
particularly in the city and province of Iloilo.
“Infrastructure
development spurs business growth, which would increase demand for
electricity,” Azurin said.
NOCECO serves 150,000
consumers in 13 towns and four cities in southern Negros Occidental.
GBP First Vice
President for Panay Nilo Madrid said the agreement marks GBP’s first
partnership in Negros Island.
