BACAVALLEY Energy, Inc. has opened a $10-million, four-megawatt (MW) biomass power plant project in San Pedro, Laguna.
In a statement, Bacavalley Energy said the project uses methane gas generated by the San Pedro landfill, which is located in a 12-hectare facility in the Southern Luzon province.
Bacavalley Energy also said it had signed a power purchase agreement with Manila Electric Co. (Meralco), the country’s largest power distribution utility, to export electricity from the power plant to the electricity grid.
The supply agreement was signed in November, Bacavalley Energy said.
The company said the San Pedro landfill had around 1.6 million tons of waste as of December 2009.
Despite two areas of the landfill being closed for dumping since 2007, another cell is still open and has a capacity of 1.2 million cubic meters.
The San Pedro power plant uses gas engines to convert methane gas into energy, Bacavalley Energy said.
Bacavalley Energy President Peregrino Fernandez said in the statement the company wants to open another methane power plant in the Visayas and another one in Luzon.
“Bacavalley Energy aims to be a leader and model in the renewable energy industry in the Philippines.
