THE SHARE of renewable energy in the total power mix may dip in the next five years, as traditional fuels like coal take center stage as the fastest way to boost capacity, Energy Secretary Jose Rene D. Almendras told reporters yesterday.

"With all the shortages...we have to invite people to build fast and they’re building coal... There is 2,700 megawatts (MW) of coal-fired generation coming between 2013-2015... With these coal-fired plants coming in, percentage of ‘green’ generation will drop below 50% [from the current 52.15%]," he said. "Hopefully, by 2016, energy shortages will be solved, then all new generation thereafter should have a larger percentage of renewable energy." -- ENJD
