ZAMBOANGA City Electric Cooperative (Zamcelco) acting general manager Jesus Castro said that Zamcelco losses almost P2 million in revenues monthly due to power pilferage.
Castro said Zamcelco's debt has soared to P800 million due to rampant power pilferage, which prompted the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management to almost cut off electricity load to Zamcelco in February 2011.
Zamcelco have managed to identify nine village in Zamboanga City where electricity pilferage is rampant.
Castro, however, named only six of the nine villages: Baliwasan, Mampang, Mariki, Rio Hondo, Sta. Catalina, Talon-Talon, and San Jose Gusu.
The management of Zamcelco has tapped the assistance of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) to investigate the suspected electricity pilferers in the nine villages, Castro said.
He added that if proven and identified, appropriate charges will be filed against the pilferers citing "they will have to pay the penalties."
He also revealed that three department stores in the city were discovered to have been stealing electricity.
The management of Zamcelco has recently hired engineers from the Zamboanga del Sur Electric Cooperative and Zamboanga del Norte Electric Cooperative to inspect and calibrate all the electric meters of business establishments to determine whether they are paying for the right amount of current consumed.
