ZAMBOANGA CITY (MindaNews/14 March) – President Benigno Simeon Aquino III has ordered the Department of Energy and Mindanao Development Authority to address the power crisis reportedly affecting parts of Mindanao, including this city.
Mayor Celso Lobregat said Aquino issued the order after meeting with him and House Deputy Speaker for Mindanao Ma. Isabelle Climaco-Salazar Tuesday in Malacañang.
Lobregat and Salazar sought the meeting in a bid to find immediate solutions to the worsening power situation which has resulted to seven- to eight-hour daily power interruptions in this city.
Other parts of Mindanao are also experiencing power curtailment depending on their power supply and actual demand.
Zamboanga City has a shortage of over 24 megawatts since the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corporation and Therma Marine, Inc. could only provide a combined power of 54 MW of the total demand of 79 MW.
Aquino also directed DoE Sec. Carlos Jericho Petilla and MinDA chair Sec. Luwalhati Antonino to attend the Zamboanga Power Forum to brief the people on the situation as well as discuss steps to be taken to address the crisis
The forum, which was initiated by Lobregat, will be held Friday.
The power crisis in Mindanao has been attributed to the decreased generating capacity of hydropower plants caused by the reduced water level in Lake Lanao.
Lobregat said the power forum aims not only to brief the people on the power situation but also to discuss possible mitigating measures. (MindaNews)   source
