Emerging Power Inc. (EPI), a renewal energy development firm, has partnered with Swedish groups and the local government unit (LGU) of Cagayan de Oro for a potential biomass facility in the city.
In a statement, EPI said it has taken initial steps to launch a project that will convert a sanitary landfill in Cagayan de Oro City into a source of renewable energy.
EPI has signed a memorandum of agreement with the Cagayan de Oro City government and Waste Recovery Boras (WRB) for a possible joint venture, according to the statement.
WRB is a partnership among Boras City in Sweden, Boras Energy and Environment, the WRB Technical Research Institute of Sweden and the University of Boras.
The group is working on a feasibility study in preparation for such project, in line with the full solid waste management plan that EPI is currently developing.
Created in 1987, the Cagayan de Oro 10-hectare landfill is located 3.5 kilometers from the city proper. It ceased operations after its 25-year life span ended in 2012.
Nenette Capaning, EPI project manager, said the company has appointed WRB to oversee the progress of the feasibility study. The Swedish entity has provided capacity building for waste and renewable energy business development in other developing countries, she said.
EPI and WRB have also tapped the services of Biogas Systems, a Swedish renewable energy company with expertise in developing waste-to-energy projects.
“Biogas Systems is willing to collaborate as technology provider and investor for waste-to-energy projects in the Philippines,” Capaning added. source
