MINDANAO can expect a power supply of 3095.9 megawatts (MW) from committed and indicative power projects that are set to go online in 2015 onwards.
According to the data presented by the Department of Energy (DOE), there are at least three committed projects for the Mindanao grid with a combined capacity of 905MW and amounting to P73.5 billion.
Sarangani Energy Corp.'s P19.5 billion 200MW Southern Mindanao Coal Fired Power Station in Maasim, Sarangani will be the first power plant to go online in February 2015, its target commissioning.
This will be followed by the Therma South Inc.'s P24 billion 300MW coal-fired Therma South Energy Project, located in Toril, Davao City and Sta.Cruz, Davao del Sur, in March 2015.
FDC Utilities Inc.'s P30 billion 405 MW FDC-Misamis Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) coal-fired power plant project at Philvidec Industrial Estate in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental will be the last to go online among the committed projects in Spetember 2016.
A combined capacity of around 2190.9MW can be expected to go online starting 2015 if the 24 indicative projects become committed projects.
These indicative projects include coal-fired, thermal, hydroelectric, geothermal, solar, bio-mass, and oil-based power projects.
Target commissioning of these indicative power plants could be as early as September 2014 and as late as December 2020.
"These indicative projects have different statuses as of now. Some are still completing their permits, others are still doing their feasibility studies, while others are still under discussion for permitting and licensing," Electic Power Industry Management Bureau director Mylene C. Capongcol said in her presentation of the Mindanao Power Situation during a DOE's sectoral focus group discussion with the business sector on the Epira Law at the Waterfront Insular Hotel Davao last Thursday.
At present, hydro power is the main source of electricity in Mindanao with an installed capacity of 982.1 MW to the grid but only 60.6 percent or 594.8 MW is the available capacity. Thermal power, on the other hand, has an installed capacity of 842.1 MW to the grid but only 78 percent or 657.2 MW is the available capacity. source
