Senate summons energy CEOs on frequent ‘brownout threats’

by Myrna Velasco August 14, 2016

Chief executive officers (CEOs) of energy companies have been sent “blanket invitation” for a Senate inquiry intending to hunt out the deeper reason behind the rolling brownouts in the Luzon grid.
The Senate investigation is slated on August 16 (Tuesday), with the panel to be led by Department of Energy Secretary (DOE) Alfonso G. Cusi and Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) Chairman Jose Vicente B. Salazar. They will be joined by the top executives of DOE-attached firms and agencies from: The Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corporation; National Power Corporation; Philippine Electricity Market Corporation; and the National Electrification Administration. The Senate also summoned CEOs and top officials of the country’s various power companies.
DOE is the agency vested with the function to ensure power supply sufficiency and reliability in the country; while the ERC is in-charge of rate-setting and also exercises oversight powers at the country’s power spot market, primarily when anti-competitive behaviors are raised against trading participants – generally the generation companies.
