ABOITIZ Power Corp. (AboitizPower) said on Monday that its subsidiary scheduled “corrective measures” to the 150-megawatt (MW) first unit of its 300-MW coal-fired power plant in Davao City that could last for over two weeks.

The planned maintenance of Therma South, Inc.’s power plant unit comes a few weeks after the scheduled outage of the second unit that has reduced much needed power supply in Mindanao.

“This maintenance activity is necessary to review Unit 1 and to implement some corrective measures as needed which should be similar in nature to the coverage of work done in the recently planned outage of Unit 2 from June 18 to July 13,” Sebastian R. Lacson, Therma South president and chief operating officer, said in a statement to the stock exchange.

The temporary shutdown started on Monday, Aug. 22 and is estimated to last until Sept. 7, the company said.

“We are confident that after this outage, (Therma South) should be better equipped to reliably meet the needs of our customers. As always, we will try our best to keep the duration of this interruption to a minimum,” Mr. Lacson said.

The planned maintenance was originally scheduled to start on Aug. 6, but was moved to the new schedule “to better adjust to the grid situation,” AboitizPower said.

It added that Therma South, the project company for the power plant, was coordinating with its customers, which are electric cooperatives and distribution utilities in Mindanao, “in order to implement measures to mitigate the impact of the maintenance activity.”

The first unit started commercial operations on September 2015, while the second unit was launched in January 2016 ahead of its commercial run a month later. The circulating fluidized bed coal-fired power plant is in Barangay Binugao, Toril District, Davao City and Barangay Inawayan, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.

On April 8, AboitizPower disclosed that the first unit had tripped in the early afternoon of April 6 because of a boiler tube leak. It scheduled the repair work to last 14 days.

AboitizPower previously said that the plant was put up to help alleviate the worsening power supply situation in Davao City and the entire Mindanao island.

The power plant supplies baseload power to more than 20 electric cooperatives and distribution utilities. These cover a big portion of the power supply to the cities of Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Gen. Santos, Zamboanga, Butuan, Kidapawan, Tagum, Koronadal, Digos, Pagadian and Cotabato, among others. -- Victor V. Saulon
